Yard Work@Stillmotion Kennels™: Building teamwork between handler and dog

At Stillmotion Kennels™ we believe that retrieving is a team sport. Whether for hunting, hunt testing, or field trial work, through the yard we train to build the communication between handler and dog that will be needed for later field work. Yard starts with:

Duke charging toward the water

Formal obedience

Forced hold

Collar conditioning

Force fetch

Three-handed casting

Force to pile

Sit to pile

Double T

Initial shore breaking

During yard work we train each dog using lots of live birds and marks. Above right, and below: Duke (Washington's Duke of Bandana) doing yard work with Brad Turner.

Important note: At Stillmotion Kennels™, we do not force any of our hunting dogs unless they are going to handle; forcing is done only past the hunting dog stage. Forcing is not a method to make the dog pick up birds; the dog must be birdy!
